Turning 3: from early intervention to preschool
Early intervention (Part C) serves babies and toddlers. At 3, the school district takes over. The plan from early intervention (the IFSP) should be replaced by an IEPIndividualized Education Program: a written plan for a child's special education services at school., or kept by agreement, by your child's third birthday.
- About 9 months before age 3, early intervention should hold a transition planning meeting with you.
- The district evaluates, with your written consent.
- If your child is eligible, the IEP is in place by the third birthday.
- Preschool special education can happen in a regular preschool, Head Start, a district classroom, or at home.
New to this?
If your child is under 3, or you have a new diagnosis, start with IDD Atlas, which covers early intervention and the first steps.
Any child 3 or older can be referred to the district's Child Find program. You do not need a diagnosis first.
